Naturism is one of the most family-friendly holidays there is. Children are free, there is space, campsites are safe and the community is welcoming. The only obstacle is often the hesitation of adults — not children.

How children react

Young children (up to 10–12 years old) accept naturism without difficulty. For them, "without clothes" is simply how things are done here, just as one wears a swimsuit at the seaside. There is no embarrassment because there is no comparison — everyone is nude, nobody is different.

Pre-teens and teenagers may have more reservations, and it is right to respect them. Many campsites have mixed areas where those who want to wear a swimsuit can do so. Never force it: naturism only works as a free choice.

How to explain it to children

No elaborate explanation is needed. "At this campsite people are without clothes because it is more comfortable and natural" is enough for most children. The questions they ask are often practical ("do I have to take my shoes off too?") rather than philosophical.

The most important point: the body is not something to be ashamed of, and looking at other people's bodies is impolite. These two messages, said simply, are enough.

Which campsite to choose

For families with young children, large and well-equipped campsites are the best choice: pools with slides, activities, play areas, restaurants. Valalta and Koversada in Istria, Euronat in the Landes, Domaine de la Jenesse in the Vendée all have family-oriented facilities.

Small, quiet campsites suit families with older children or those looking for peace. Always check our guide's specific rating for "family-friendly".

Practical points

Sun cream: children burn faster than adults, especially on parts of the body that have never seen the sun. Apply SPF 50 every two hours and use a sun hat in strong sun. Bringing a pareo or light T-shirt for shaded breaks is always useful.

Sandals: campsites have hot paths, shared showers and pools. A pair of washable sandals for every family member is essential.

Towels: every child needs their own personal towel to carry at all times. Getting them to carry it themselves is a good way to explain the rule.

Safety and rules

Naturist campsites are very safe environments for children: the community is attentive, social oversight is high, and families are the majority of guests. The photography rules protect children: at a naturist campsite you cannot photograph people without consent, and this applies even more strictly to minors.

If a child says they no longer want to be without clothes, respect their choice without discussion. Naturism does not work for everyone, and that is perfectly fine.
