What to pack for a naturist campsite

Less than you think. Naturism simplifies the suitcase, but some things are compulsory and others make the difference between a comfortable holiday and an awkward one. Here is the list we would use, by situation.

Compulsory, or nearly

  • Sitting towel

Rule number one of naturism: always sit on your own towel, at the bar and by the pool too. Bring two, one small enough for your bag.

  • INF naturist card

Required at many Italian and German campsites, recommended everywhere. Issued by your national federation (British Naturism, FFN, DFK) and valid for a year.

  • SPF 50 sunscreen

Without a swimsuit, parts that have never seen the sun will burn. Get a large bottle and reapply every two hours.

  • Washable sandals or flip-flops

For showers, sanitary blocks and hot paths. Choose a quick-drying model.

Beach and sea

  • Rock shoes

Istria, Calabria, Liguria: rocky and pebbly coasts. The beaches at Solaris, Pizzo Greco and Guvano all need them.

  • Parasol with screw anchor

Many naturist beaches have no shade and no hire; a screw anchor holds in Atlantic and North Sea winds.

  • Waterproof beach backpack

For the 20 minutes of sand at Maspalomas or the path at Montalivet: hands free and phone dry.

  • Insulated bottle

No kiosk in the central stretch of many beaches: a litre of cold water each.

Campsite

  • Portable fridge

On a pitch with electricity included, an electric cool box beats any cool bag.

  • CEE camping extension lead

European hook-ups use the blue 16 A CEE plug; you need 25 metres and an adapter for national sockets.

  • Head torch

Many naturist campsites are poorly lit at night, La Sablière for one.

  • Washing line and pegs

For the swimsuits you won't use and the towels you always will.

Small things people forget

  • Sarong or light kimono

For moments when covering up is required: restaurant, shop, textile zones of mixed resorts such as Koversada.

  • Mosquito repellent

Pine forests and rivers, from Euronat to the Cèze, are full of them at dusk.
